Job Description

This internship will help ensure a resilient, safe, and sustainable built environment. This is a great opportunity to gain insight into a government affairs role (examining both state/local and federal government affairs) and develop professional written content to be viewed at a national level. The American Wood Council is the voice of North American wood products manufacturing, an industry that provides over 450,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. AWC represents 87 percent of the structural wood products industry. Our members make products that are essential to everyday life that are derived from a renewable resource that absorbs and sequesters carbon for many decades. Our staff experts develop state-of-the-art engineering data, technology, and standards for wood products to ensure their safe and efficient design, as well as provide information on wood design, green building, and environmental regulations. AWC also advocates for balanced government policies that affect wood products. As an intern in government affairs, you will: Monitor and track state and local policies concerning structural wood products as they relate to codes/standards, climate, and sustainability legislation. Research appropriations projects and funding streams for AWC member companies. Attend (virtually) Congressional Hearings and produce various hearing transcripts/memos as it pertains to AWC’s priorities. Support the AWC team with the 2024 Spring Board Meeting preparation and any planned fly-ins. Participate in advocacy work to advance embodied carbon emissions reductions legislation at the state and local level and/or Farm Bill priorities. Write social media, e-newsletter articles and other communications items to highlight the work of the Government affairs team. Produce various documents as needed for AWC Staff. Research and propose potential partnerships and opportunities that can advance AWC’s work.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to work in-person ~1 day a week and 1-2 days remotely during the workweek in late January to early May (exact start/end dates are flexible). Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with multiple short-term and long-term projects (AWC will consider the intern’s work schedule and availability when assigning projects). Strong written communications skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, and online research. Some knowledge of policymaking at any government level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of or experience in natural resources, climate, and/or sustainability policy is preferred. Knowledge of the wood products industry and/or building codes/standards is a plus. Based on the type and level of responsibilities in this role, we believe it will be most appealing to someone currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, or related area. However, we welcome all individuals to apply regardless of degree major if you meet the required qualifications.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

At AWC, we value diverse backgrounds and capabilities and invite all talented individuals to apply to be part of our team and support our mission. In accordance with Federal law and US Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. #J-18808-Ljbffr University of the District of Columbia
