The Virtual-First Primary Care Physician Assistant works as part of a virtual care clinical resource hub and will be assigned to a specific state or Valor Healthcare Region as licensure and needs dictate. The Virtual-First Primary Care Physician Assistant is an extension of the "in-person" care team, providing short and long-term clinical coverage, as required. The Clinical Resource Hub is organizationally aligned to the Chief Medical Officer. The Physician Assistant works collaboratively with the supervising physician to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries and deliver preventive and therapeutic treatment of Veteran patient primary care needs.

Core Responsibilities

· Patient Care: Actively diagnoses and treats our veterans under the direction and responsibility of a supervising physician.

  • Examines patients for symptoms of organic or congenital disorders. The nurse practitioner determines the nature and extent of injury or disorder, performs comprehensive physical examination, referring to diagnostic images and tests, and uses medical instruments and equipment for all chronic disease management. All findings are documented into the patient’s electronic medical record utilizing the VA’s VISTA/CPRS electronic patient record system. Maintains confidentiality of veterans’ data and information.
  • Develops and implements patient management plans and assists in provision of continuity of care.
  • Orders and performs diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, laboratory tests, etc. and interprets test results for deviations from normal and provides patient notification and follow up care.
  • Prescribes medication and recommends dietary and activity programs as indicated by diagnosis.
  • Refers patient to the VA medical specialist when indicated.
  • Counsels patients on the use of prescription medications, educates patients, assesses mental health issues, and provides routine health maintenance.
  • Evaluates patients’ records from medical providers outside the VA and works with these patients utilizing rules set forth by the VA for co-managed care.
  • Completes all clinical reminders “due” at the time of each patient visit.
  • Completes the documentation of the medical record within twenty-four 24 hours of a patient encounter.
  • Solicits medical management consults or input when appropriate.
  • Complies with all VA guidelines in regard to appropriate and timely response to all patient requests, alerts and notifications, consults, orders, lab results and diagnostic studies.
  • Complies with the VA formulary process and consult protocols.
  • Complies with all VA guidelines regarding appropriate and timely clinical documentation, including the completion of all encounters by close of business.
  • Addresses the clinical needs of all walk-in/triage/urgent care patients.
  • Agrees to cross cover other providers, including alerts and notifications.
  • Complies with all VA and company training requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

· Compliance: Fulfill compliance requirements of the Office of Inspector General (OIG), Joint Commission (JC), Environment of Care (EOC) oversight, lab compliance and other related items.

· Clinical Outcomes: Remain focused on achieving excellent clinical outcomes through the specified VA guidelines.

· Customer Service: Must provide excellent customer service to each veteran, both in person and over the phone, as well as to fellow colleagues and clinic visitors.

  • Establish and maintain a warm, welcoming, and professional atmosphere for our colleagues and veterans, ensuring needs and expectations are consistently met.
  • Collaborates with Clinic leadership to resolve veteran concerns or complaints.

· Enrollment Growth: Participate in the clinic’s outreach events to help support the clinic’s enrollment initiatives.

· Save & Recapture: Support patient enrollment and retention by providing guidance, when necessary, regarding scheduling, follow-up visits or nurse visits.

· Strategic Initiatives: Embrace and support new initiatives, whether clinical or operational.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree (BPAS or a related field) required. Master’s degree (MPAS) preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited program for physician assistants, including preceptorship.
  • Current certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Must hold a current and unrestricted nurse practitioner license in Texas, Tennesse, New York, California or Florida
  • A minimum of two (2) years of working experience as a Physician Assistant in an outpatient setting preferred. Specific requirements could vary based on individual VA contract.
  • Must be credentialed and remain in good standing through the Veterans Health Administration(VA).
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, must be renewed periodically as specified by the AHA, and in ACLS if specified by individual VAMC contract.
  • Current, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
  • Annual PPD test
  • Must be compliant with federal, state, local government or contract specific vaccine mandates and/or requirements.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • This is considered a safety sensitive position
