Job Summary :

We are seeking post-graduate summer interns for our laboratory. A successful candidate will exhibit professional and effective interpersonal skills. Attention to detail and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy are necessary.

The internships run full-time, from May through August, for the following hours in the departments below:

  • GCMS – 2 openings - Monday-Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
  • LCMS 1 – Monday through Friday 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  • LCMS 2 – Monday through Friday 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  • LCMS 3 – Monday through Friday12:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  • LCMS 4 – Monday through Friday 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  • LCMS 6 – Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
  • LCMS 7 – Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
  • GC/SS – Monday-Friday 7:30 am – 4:00 pm
  • Screening Chemistry – Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm
  • Screening TOF – Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
  • Metals – Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Requirements:

*NMS Labs requires applicants to submit official or unofficial transcripts prior to extending an offer and those without transcripts will not be considered. You must have completed your undergrad coursework and have graduated by the end of May 2025 to be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science
  • Degree must be in a chemical, physical, biological science, or forensic science from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 22 semester credit hours in college-level chemistry coursework including coursework and labs:
    • General Chemistry I & II (8 credits)
    • Organic Chemistry I & II (8 credits)
    • Two, 3-semester hr. courses from the following possibilities: Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Informatics, Instrumental Analysis, Mass Spectrometry, Quantitative Analysis, Separation Science, Spectroscopic Analysis, Biochemistry, Drug Metabolism, Forensic Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Toxicology; Physical Chemistry I & II along with any chemistry course labeled as CHEM or CHE on the transcript.

Duties vary depending on the department; they include but are not limited to the following:

  • Handles biological specimens.
  • Retains specimens in suitable storage area and follows chain of custody procedures.
  • Prepares samples for testing.
  • Generates pre-analytical reports for specimen analysis.
  • Prepare and/or validates reagents, controls, and calibrators.
  • May document quality control and enter results in LIMS (varies by department): Metals/Screening.
  • Performs instrument setup and daily instrument maintenance.
  • Performs basic instrument troubleshooting and takes appropriate action. i.e., recognize when something is wrong and inform a senior analyst.
  • Independently performs analytical testing.
  • Discards all chemicals and biological materials properly.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of basic analytical concepts, identify, and resolve non-technical problems, and possess knowledge of good laboratory safety practices.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to hear.
  • Vision (with correction) including color, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Standing, reaching with hands and arms, and using hands and fingers to manipulate instrument or equipment controls, computer keyboard, office equipment, objects, or tools.
  • Movement from one work location to another
  • Sitting and standing, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Lifting objects up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to travel as needed for court testimony.
  • Exposure to intermittent or constant sounds generated by equipment.
  • Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, and dust
  • Handling of biological material and blood-borne pathogens
  • Handling of toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Proximity to moving parts.
